Adam Wachtel had a lot of fun with his G1 Breeders Cup Mile winner Tourist but when it came time to send him to stud at WinStar Wachtel realized the need to support him with his own mares. Wachtel, generally strictly a racehorse owner had never delved into the breeding side of the sport.
Turning to BSW Bloodstock to buy a few mares Wachtel was rewarded with a first out 2 year old winner on June 14th. Took Charge (2yo Take Charge Indy) did exactly that when taking a
Maiden Special Weight race at Belmont Park on June 14th earning an 80 Beyer for trainer Chris Englehart.
Took Charge’s dam Charlie’s Legacy (Indian Charlie) was purchased on Wachtel’s behalf at Fasig-Tipton February in 2017 with Took Charge in-utero for $60,000. Charlie’s Legacy is from the family of 5 time G1 Winning Champion Indian Blessing.
A year later at the same sale, another public auction purchase was made on Wachtel’s behalf, this time for $80,000. Wicked Charm, by leading broodmare sire Ghostzapper, had just had her 2015 foal by Speightstown run 2nd in a Stake at Delta Downs. That 2015 foal has tuned out to be Bobby’s Wicked One, a G3 winner and now G1 placed after a gallant 2nd place finish in the Churchill Downs Stakes on Kentucky Derby day behind subsequent G1 Met Mile winner Mitole. Put back in-foal to Speightstown for 2019, Wicked Charm will go back through the sales ring for ELiTE Sales at the end of the year.
All of this success comes on the heels of G1W Channel Maker, a BSW private purchase on behalf of Wachtel and Gary Barber in 2017. He has since rewarded his connections with two G1 wins and over 1.9 Million in earnings.
Both Wicked Charm and Charlie’s Legacy have Tourist foals to look forward to and Wachtel has an exciting two-year-old in Took Charge to campaign at the Spa this summer.
